Le miniere di ferro e di rame esistettero fin dall\u2019antichit\u00e0 e l\u2019attivit\u00e0 metallurgica a Serifos risalirebbe al Primo periodo Cicladico (3000 A.C.) Sull\u2019isola non esistono per\u00f2 particolari ritrovamenti archeologici, eccetto le antiche costruzioni di marmo come le torri rinvenute nella baia di Aspropyrgos, in quella di Koutala e la rettangolare construzione di Psaropyrgos (8,5m x 4 m) realizzata con rocce allungate nota anche come il trono dei Ciclopi, nella zona a sud est verso Mega Livadi. Nella penisola di Kefalas invece \u00e8 stata ritrovata una torre circolare di marmo e gneiss. Alcuni di questi ritrovamenti sembrano essere associati al periodo della fiorente attivit\u00e0 metallurgica dell\u2019isola. Secondo la mitologia a Serifos arriv\u00f2 la scatola in cui Acrisius re di Argo rinchiuse sua figlia Danae con il piccolo Perseo in modo da farli scomparire. I pescatori di Serifos raccolsero la scatola e offrirono rifugio ai due. Una volta cresciuto, Perseo fu persuaso dal re di Serifos Polidete, che nel frattempo si era innamorato di Danae, ad affrontare Medusa e ad ucciderla. Polidete temeva che Perseo si potesse opporre all\u2019amore verso la madre Danae e quindi cerc\u00f2 di disfarsi di Perseo.\u00a0 Questi gli doveva portare come prova di successo la testa di Medusa, che per\u00f2 trasformava in roccia chiunque la guardasse negli occhi. Polidete in realt\u00e0 sperava che Medusa uccidesse Perseo, ma egli aiutato dagli Dei riusc\u00ec nell\u2019impresa \u00a0grazie ad uno stratagemma. Usando uno specchio Perseo riusc\u00ec ad uccidere Medusa senza guardarla direttamente negli occhi e fece ritorno a Serifos con la testa di Medusa. In seguito alla costituzione del Ducato dell\u2019Egeo, Serifos fu raggiunta da alcune nobili famiglie Italiane (come quella dei fratelli Ghisi) che la governarono in quanto vassalli del Ducato. Durante la dominazione Veneziana Serifos conobbe un grande sviluppo economico e culturale. Spesso per\u00f2 gli abitanti erano \u00a0vittime dei pirati, soprattutto durante la dominazione turca le incursioni erano numerosissime. Queste culminarono nel 1537 con lo sbarco di Aradeino Barbarossa. La prima fu \u201cla Compagnia greca di estrazione\u201d nel 1870 che esportava minerale grezzo in tutti i paesi europei. Nel 1880 lo sfruttamento del minerale di ferro fu assunto dalla Compagnia di Serifos \u201cSpiliazeza\u201d che fu fondata da alcuni ricchi greci provenienti da Costantinopoli grazie all\u2019aiuto della banca Ottomana che gestiva cospicui interessi e capitali provenienti da Inghilterra e Francia. A Mega Livadi esistono tutt\u2019ora i resti del palazzo che rappresentava il quartier generale della compagnia di estrazione.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Le miniere subirono un declino fino al 1934, quando aument\u00f2 la capacit\u00e0 estrattiva e la quantit\u00e0 degli scambi sotto la direzione tedesca.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La principale destinazione per il minerale era la Germania e per questo motivo l\u2019estrazione rimase attiva durante il periodo di occupazione tedesca. Alla fine del periodo di occupazione George Grohmann abband\u00f2 la Grecia. Durante la stagione estiva ci sono numerosi collegamenti navali, mentre durante il resto dell\u2019anno la frequenza dei traghetti diminuisce. Il viaggio con un traghetto normale dura 4 ore, mentre la traversata con il traghetto veloce disponibile per\u00f2 solo durante la stagione estiva dura circa 2 ore e 30\u2019.<\/p>\n<p
